Bev Langley - The Heart of Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre

Awarded South Australia’s Local Hero of the Year 2009
Beverley Langley is the owner of 'Minton Farm', a property located in Cherry Gardens, approximately 15km South of Adelaide, South Australia. The sanctuary is a native fauna rescue and rehabilitation centre which houses a wide variety of wildlife, has been fox-proofed with fencing and re-vegetated along each of its boundaries.
Beverley and her colleagues at Minton Farm have tried to create a safe haven for injured wildlife, as well as for the wildlife inhabitants of the area through the improvement of habitat and control of feral species. Approximately 600 native animals a year are rescued and rehabilitated on the sanctuary before being released. Over 13,000 injured and orphaned native animals and birds have been received over 30 years of service. Another approx 11,000 creatures have been assisted offsite via phone, email, website and Facebook advise and assistance.
The sanctuary covers approximately 2.5 hectares made up of pasture surrounded by vegetation belts of gum, acacia and various understory plants with reeds and rushes planted along the creek line among casuarina and gum regeneration. The property was cleared and farmed in the late 1800s before being re-vegetated with endemic species as a wildlife corridor to join remnant local scrub.
Aside from the many species being rehabilitated, fauna sighted on Minton Farm includes several species of wrens, honey eaters, robins and whistlers, as well as kookaburras, tawny frogmouths, owls, hawks, wedge-tailed eagles, bandicoots, possums, koalas, kangaroos, wombats and bettongs.

In 2021 the volume of rescues received directly from domestic cat attack had increased dramatically. Potentially because of the large number of cats adopted during Covid lockdown, which had been left to roam when the owners returned back to work. A petition was started to encourage Parliament to review the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 to address the problem. 24/7 cat containment Statewide is the only way to control domestic cats and help wildlife to survive.
Being able to change attitudes and make people more conscious of the natural world will hopefully create empathy for our wildlife and encourage
people to make more wildlife friendly choices. This in turn will help to ensure that future generations can appreciate what we Have today………………..Biodiversity.
Ultimately by gaining funding for our rescue work and education programs we aim to give people the tools they need to be able to make a positive difference to the lives of animals in our environment and enrich the lives of those involved with animals!
